Remote Communications

When you're traveling beyond cell service, having the right communication tools can make a big difference. In this hands-on workshop, we'll explore the different technologies available for staying connected with your group and communicating with the outside world when you're traveling in remote areas.

We'll start with vehicle-to-vehicle communication, covering FRS, GMRS, CB, and HAM radio. We'll compare how each system works, their strengths and limitations, range, licensing requirements, equipment options, and ease of use. We'll also discuss which systems make sense for different types of travelers and how to build an effective vehicle-based radio setup.

We'll then move beyond traditional radios and explore off-grid and emergency communications, including Garmin inReach two-way messaging, satellite phones, and Starlink. We'll discuss how these systems work, when each is most useful, and how they can provide a critical communication link when you're far beyond cell coverage.

Whether you're new to remote travel or looking to improve your current communication setup, this class will give you a practical understanding of the options available and help you make informed decisions about the equipment that's right for your adventures.
