The goal of this course is to put you on a path to safely and ecologically off-road. This course is taught assuming you may travel off-road SOLO (no other vehicles with you), REMOTE, and INTERNATIONAL. Upon completion of this course you begin to understand the limitations of your vehicle and your driving skills allowing you to intelligently choose excursions and trails to match the capabilities of your vehicle and your off-roading knowledge and skill.
Day One - 1/2 day Knowledge Development (classroom). During lunch you'll get an overview of how 4x4 systems function, and when/when not to deploy them. Afternoon: 1/2 day "Getting to Know Your Vehicle (Priority Customization for your Vehicle)," 4WD Gearing, Basic Tire Repair 101, and Traveling Responsibly.
Day Two - Airing Down and Inflating Tires, Driving a Level Rocky Trail, Rocky Hills and Spotting, Driving in Sand and Use of Traction Boards, Methods of Lifting Your Vehicle Off the Ground (Bottle/Scissor Jacks, Inflatable Jack), Changing a tire on soft and uneven terrain, Proper Use of Kinetic Energy Straps, Electronic Traction Control and Locker Use (for those that have these features), Trail Driving.
Target Audience: The curriculum is primarily designed for novice off-road drivers owning stock or slightly modified 4-Wheel Drive vehicles.
Vehicle Requirements: Any reliable 4-Wheel Drive or AWD vehicle with:
- Street legal
- 5" + of minimum ground clearance
- Full-size spare tire
- Half tank of gas or full electric charge
- Seat belts for all passengers
- Vehicle in excellent working condition, no fluid leaks, etc
Equipment Requirements: During this course you will be introduced to essential off-road equipment. The equipment used in this course will be supplied by the trainer, but you are welcome to use your own equipment. Please note that your personal equipment will be evaluated for safety before use.
Food and Lodging: Food and lodging will not be supplied. Please prepare to bring a packed lunch during the day, and plenty of water. There are many suitable hotels and camping areas close to the training area. Reservations for lodging are the responsibility of the attendee. You will not be allowed to camp on-site at the training facility.
